2017 Famine Commemorations

BUNBURY COMMEMORATION
Saturday 20st May 2017
1pm - Guided Tour of King Cottage Museum Cost: $10 per person
3pm - Famine Commemoration

King Cottage Museum, 77 Forrest Avenue Bunbury
A replica Travel Box made in Arbour Hill prison in Dublin will be presented to King Cottage Museum.
Followed by refreshments courtesy King Cottage Museum
This event is dedicated to Bridget Mulqueen from Limerick who came to Western Australia on the Travencore in 1853 following the Irish Famine years of 1845 to 1848 and settled in Bunbury.
Bridget arrived with other young women from Ireland and some of them were destitute while others had lost their parents and families as a result of the famine.

COMMEMORATION Sunday 21st May 2017 11am

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church – Dardanup
A replica Travel Box made in Arbour Hill prison in Dublin will be blessed and presented to the people of Dardanup.
Includes a visit to the graveside of Elizabeth Carbury in the Pioneer Cemetery, Dardanup
Followed by refreshments in the Thomas Little Hall
This event is dedicated to Elizabeth Carbury from Galway who came to Western Australia on the Palestine in 1853 following the Irish Famine years of 1845 to 1848 and settled in Dardanup.
Elizabeth arrived with her sister Mary and other young women from Mount Bellew workhouse in Ireland.
Some of the young women were destitute and others had lost their parents and families as a result of the famine.
